You can’t be happy if you’re mad.
And if you are upset – that means you care.
So the easiest thing to do when you are upset is to simply . . . not! . . . care!
Easier said than done, like most things in life. But as we discovered years ago: most things don’t matter, not in the long run. Not when you begin looking past what angers or enrages you and ask yourself the question: “What will this matter in a day? Or a week? Or a month? Or at the end of my lifetime?”
The answer is usually: nothing. Whatever it is – that driver cutting you off, that kid getting into the shaving cream, that wife nagging about the yard – it all doesn’t matter in the long run. The only thing that matters is being happy.
And like we said: you can’t be happy if you’re mad.
So care a little less about those pesky irritations in life. It won’t kill you to wait a moment in that long slow moving line; it won’t hurt to let that other driver in. As a matter of fact – once you get the hang of it – you’ll find it might even make you feel better about yourself.
Give it a shot the next time you feel that flash of irritation. Step back for a moment, take a deep breath, and ask yourself:
“Does this really matter? Is this WORTH me getting myself all worked up about?”
Chances are it’s not. and chances are you’ll be the one happier for it. Because, like I said: Apathy can be a wonderful thing – especially when it comes to dealing with anger issues.
Good luck, take care, and peace.
